Style-Conscious Quadratic Field Classifier

چکیده
1 When patterns occur in the form of groups generated by the same source, distinctions between sources can be exploited to improve accuracy. We present a method for exploiting such ‘style’ consistency using a quadratic discriminant. We show that under reasonable assumptions on the feature and class distributions, the estimation of style parameters is simple and accurate.

Style-Consistency in Isogenous Patterns
In many applications of pattern recognition, patterns appear in groups (fields) that have a common origin. For example, a printed word is a field of character patterns printed in the same font. A common origin induces consistency of style among features measured on patterns. In the presence of multiple styles, the features of co-occurring patterns are statistically dependent through the underly...
متن کاملAn Iterative Algorithm for Optimal Style Conscious Field Classification
Modeling consistency of style in isogenous fields of patterns (such as character patterns in a word from the same font or writer) can improve classification accuracy. Since such patterns are interdependent, the Bayes classifier requires maximization of a probability score over all fieldlabels, which are exponentially more numerous with increasing field length. The iterative field classification...
متن کاملClassifier Adaptation with Non-representative Training Data
We propose an adaptive methodology to tune the decision boundaries of a classi er trained on non-representative data to the statistics of the test data to improve accuracy. Speci cally, for machine printed and handprinted digit recognition we demonstrate that adapting the class means alone can provide considerable gains in recognition. On machine-printed digits we adapt to the typeface, on hand...
متن کاملClassification of Style-Constrained Pattern-Fields
In some classification tasks, all patterns in a field, such as digits in a ZIP-code image, originate from the same, but unknown, source (writer/print style). The class-conditional feature distributions depend on the source of the patterns. Several sources may share the same distribution, or style. The style-conditional distributions are estimated from the training set. The optimal field-classif...
متن کاملA Shallow Description Framework for Musical Style Recognition
In the field of computer music, pattern recognition algorithms are very relevant for music information retrieval (MIR). One challenging task within this area is the automatic recognition of musical style, that has a number of applications like indexing and selecting musical databases. In this paper, the classification of monophonic melodies of two different musical styles (jazz and classical) r...
